The Americas Section - What is it?
The Americas Section of HPM spans an area that is immense both in its physical and cultural dimensions. Our members have a correspondingly wide scope of interests, ranging from scholarly pursuit of knowledge to practical classroom issues. We aim to foster communication and cooperation among our members by means of this website and, where possible, through face-to-face meetings at local, regional or international conferences.
The International Study Group on the Relations Between HISTORY AND PEDAGOGY of MATHEMATICS, the parent body of the Americas Section, has its own site, http://www.clab.edc.uoc.gr/hpm or www.mathedu-jp.org/hpm/index.htm. The international Newsletter can be accessed from this site. However, the Americas web site will still provide a link to the Newsletters.
The Contact Page of this website lists the name of the international HPM Chair, the Newsletter editors and global contacts for the organization. The HPM Chair is Constantinos Tzanakis, tzanakis@edc.uoc.gr

*Aim and focus*
The /HPM 2008/ is the seventh quadrennial meeting of the /International
Study Group on the Relations between the History and Pedagogy of
Mathematics /(the HPM Group), affiliated to ICMI. It is a satellite
meeting of the corresponding ICME (/International Congress on
Mathematical Education/) and is scheduled close to ICME. These
quadrennial meetings, are a major activity of HPM, to bring together
those who are interested on the relation between the history of
mathematics and mathematics education such as:
· Researchers in mathematics education, and its relation to the history
of mathematics;
· Mathematics teachers at all levels who are eager to get insights on
how the history of mathematics may be integrated into teaching and help
students to learn mathematics;
· Historians of mathematics, who wish to talk about their research;
· Mathematicians, who want to learn about new possibilities to teach
their discipline;
· All those with an interest in the history of mathematics and pedagogy.
*Main themes*
The /HPM 2008/ is a place where mathematicians, educators, historians,
researchers and students, can make presentations and participate in
discussions. The programme and activities are structured around the
following /main themes/:
1. Integrating the History of Mathematics in Mathematics Education.
2. Topics in the History of Mathematics Education.
3. Mathematics and its relation to science, technology and the arts:
historical issues and educational implications.
4. Cultures and Mathematics.
5. Historical, philosophical and epistemological issues in Mathematics
Education.
*Activities during HPM2008*
During the /HPM 2008/ there will be
· one-hour /plenary lectures /on each of the five main themes
· two one-hour /panel discussions/.
· parallel sessions of 25-minute /oral presentations/, followed by
5-minute discussions.
· /poster exhibitions/ with discussion sessions
· /exhibitions/ of books and other didactical material
· /1-hour workshops/ (limited number upon special request)
*Time and place*
HPM 2008 will be held from *Monday 14 July* to *Friday 18 July 2008* in
*Mexico City*.
Sessions will be held on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with a
mathematical tour on Wednesday.
*Official Languages*
The official languages are English and Spanish.
*Submission of proposals*
*ABSTRACTS*
*31 October 2007*: deadline for submitting Abstracts of proposals for
all types of activities.
*30 November 2007*: Notification of acceptance or not of the submitted
proposals.
*FULL TEXTS*
*31 January 2008*: deadline for submitting full texts of proposals for
all types of activities.
*15 March 2008*: Notification of acceptance or not of the submitted
proposals.
More information will be available in the /First Announcement/
*The web site*
Making known the /HPM 2008 /in various countries is a major task to be
realized by the SPC. To this end, a web site will be available shortly
at *http://www.red-cimates.org.mx/HPM2008.htm* This is going to be a
very efficient tool to make known the HPM 2008 worldwide, to allow for
online registration etc.
*Proceedings*
Publishing the Proceedings of /HPM 2008/ is also a major task.
More details on the size of the texts, the format guidelines will be
announced in due course from the /HPM 2008/ and HPM websites
http://www.red-cimates.org.mx/HPM2008.htm
http://www.clab.edc.uoc.gr/hpm/ respectively.

The quadrennial HPM meeting, a satellite meeting of the ICME quadrennial
meeting, will be held in Mexico City, July 2008, at the National
University. The HPM meeting will begin either July 14 or July 15 and
last five or six days. Details will be posted on our web site just as
soon as they are worked out. In the meantime, it is not too soon to
begin planning to come to the meeting. As usual, the meeting will be
devoted to the history of mathematics and its use in teaching at any
level from kindergarten up.
It has been my privilege to attend two earlier HPM meetings, one in
Taipei in 2000 and the other in Uppsala, in 2004. Both of these were
wonderful experiences, enriching my knowledge of history of mathematics
and its uses in teaching, but also leading to collegial friendships and
cultural experiences that reached far beyond the formal sessions. The
meeting in Mexico City will continue this fine tradition. Please
encourage students and colleagues who might be interested in attending
this meeting to begin planning for their attendance and seeking funding.
The HPM Americas Section will meet this spring in Atlanta during the
NCTM national meeting. HPM will meet in the Hazelnut Room, M3 North
Tower at the Omni Hotel at CNN Center from 5 to 7 p.m on Friday, March
23 2007. There will be several talks on topics of broad interest in the
history of mathematics and its uses in classrooms, with particular
attention to K-12 classrooms.
This session will be dedicated to Karen Dee Michalowicz.
| Speaker | Topic |
| Lisa Lavelle | Viete |
| Gina McGovern | Putting Descartes before the Source |
| Mia Abeles | Copernicus |
| Kathryn Proscope | History of Geometric Thinking in Africa |
| Greisy Winicky-Landman | The Harmonic Triangle |
| Bob Stein | John Wallis and Interpolation |
The first four talks will be brief, less than ten minutes each.
Henry S. Kempner, President-Elect of the NCTM, has expressed the hope of
joining us. He may briefly address the group.
After the meeting, those who are so inclined will continue the
discussions in a more relaxed vein at a local restaurant.
Victor Katz and Frank Swetz are the editors of an online history of mathematics journal, Convergence. It can be read by going to the Mathematics Association Web site, www.maa.org. The articles that the journal are publishing are designed for teachers of secondary, college and university students. Electronic media provides authors the opportunity to use interactive activities or demonstrations in their articles. The publication, although in English, welcomes authors worldwide. To submit an article contact Victor Katz at vkatz@udc.edu
.Please read the latest HPM Newsletter available on this website, as well as, on the HPM sites mentioned above.
For your information, the Philadelphia Area Seminar on the History of Mathematics has a web site: http://www66.homepage.villanova.edu/thomas.bartlow/history/PASHoM.htm
Please see the web page www.pohlecolloquium.org for the full schedule for the Pohle Colloquim Series, coordinated by Rob Bradley and Pat Allaire. The Department of Mathematics & Computer Science at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY hosts the colloquium. It is named in honor of the late Fred Pohle, a former chairman of the department. Titles and abstracts are available on the web page.
Also, please view the "MEETINGS" page from time to time to view up-coming meetings and events. Up coming meetings are also noted in each HPM Newsletter. This web site is meant to be a forum for HPM activities all over the world. We would like to include information on any upcoming conferences that will occur in any area or nation. Please notify Karen Dee Michalowicz, email: karendm@aol.com , about upcoming events to post on the web site.
